Success Tails with Smart Dogs Boutique

Janet Grindlay runs Smart Dogs Boutique from her home in Wiltshire. After relocating to a new area and didn’t want another 9-5 job, Janet set up Smart Dogs Boutique, which has been running for three years. Smart Dogs Boutique has won multiple awards one of which is from Dragon’s Den Theo Paphitis.

What steps did you take to set up your business?
I had to purchase a new sewing machine and had to have a website built. Thankfully, I had a family member that could help me with my website as I didn’t know where to start.

Katie helped me set up my social media accounts as I knew I needed to be on Facebook and Twitter to help sell my products.

What have been the biggest frustrations in your business?
My biggest frustrations is finding suitable fabric so I can offer quality products, that are strong and suitable for all dogs. The suppliers always change their stock, meaning I have to change my designs on a regular basis.

What business tools do you use?
I use Canva and Picmonkey for designing and creating my social media post graphics.
I’m a member of The Barking Tribe which is fantastic. Having support and help of other like-minded pet business owners, especially when you work at home on your own has been great. The Barking Tribe has helped my business big time by guiding me through social media, how to generate more sales and grow my business. I have been with The Barking Tribe from the start of my business, the help and guidance I received has been invaluable.

What keeps you motivated in your business?
I love receiving reviews on the product that I have made and people sharing photos of their dog in my products. The reviews and comments help me remain motivated.

What is your favourite quote?
“Do it because you enjoy it”

What advice would you give to someone starting out in business?
Take time and do lots of research, look carefully in the start up cost.
