“How They Made It In Biz” with Boot Buddy

Boot Buddy make custom made car boot liners and dog guards, based in Worcestershire.

It all began with David and Adrian wanting to protecting their cars from overspilling buckets placed in the boot for their window cleaning business. They wanted to protect their car boots from water spills and bad smells which lead them to design a small rubber tray. Several design changes later taking place in Adrian’s garden shed they settled on a design and began to sell online, and this is where Boot Buddy began!

They started to get requests from website visitors for a higher sided version of our liner, specifically to protect their boot carpet from dog hairs and muddy paws! We can understand that one guys!

How did you raise awareness and market your business?

We use a number of social media accounts to engage with dog owners and raise awareness of Boot Buddy – Facebook, Twitter, Crufts and product testing articles have helped us get where we are today.

We are thrilled to have been placed 2nd out of 10 by Auto Express when testing the “Best car boot liners” on the market. We also have been featured in Auto Express’ “Best motoring kit 2014” along side well known brands Vax and Garmin. These have both provided a great boost to our business and we are proud to be part of it.

What does trading at Crufts mean to your business?

Crufts is great for us because it gives us chance to meet the public face to face and get a real feel for what they need and how we can help. Plus we get to demonstrate our products which always shows them at their best.

How has being a trader at Crufts helped your business?

Its helped us to really get a read on how people react to our products and ascertain what they are in need of. This inspires improvements and future products.

What advice would you give to someone starting their own pet related business?

Know your market and don’t rely on your own assumptions. The customer really is always right so base your entire model on what they need, not on what you think they need. Get the info of them and use it as your blueprint.

To be part of several business networks and twitter hours to get advise if needed has been so helpful during our journey. Its great to see so many other businesses at different stages and share ideas.

What is your favourite business resource or tool?

Social media has been a great tool for us to communicate and engage with new and old customers so that is easily our favourite! It is such a powerful and growing tool that allows us to share fun and informative content about our products and services. It is also a fantastic platform to meet fellow business owners in our industry.

If you could start your business again, what would you change?

Nothing. I think the lessons one can learn from past failures contribute to future success.
